The State of My Journalism Skills
Journalism Skills (Blog Entry №2)
Becoming a good journalist is indeed not an easy thing to do. There are must-have skills that take time to acquire if you want to be successful. Now I have this opportunity to examine the state of my journalism skills.
I could say that currently, I have an average level of technical skills in journalism. Being efficient in graphic design, photography, and videography were skills that I was able to pick up in Special Program in the Arts and Arts and Design Track from junior to senior high school, respectively. I know that I could use them to pursue my path in studying journalism. I may not have been exposed to writing and speaking that much throughout those years because, honestly, I wasn’t into them. I always thought of myself to be one of those people with visual-spatial intelligence until I graduated from high school. I also had the chance to look into my journalism skills before I took up Bachelor of Arts in Communication in college, and to become a good storyteller as a journalist, I knew that I have to work on these skills:
Persistence in reading and writing
Interpersonal and speaking skills
Research and attention to detail
Fortunately, we are about to go on with our Exposure training to local radio and television stations — a chance for me to witness personally what goes on and how it works behind the cameras. I certainly think that this experience will teach me a lot about how journalists do things in stations technically. After the training, I would be guided more on how to work objectively with the skills I needed to improve.
The journey I have decided to take may not be the easiest, and there are so many things to learn that may take time to be successful, but I know that this is what I want and love. So, it is not impossible.
